Asaba 2018: Amusan wins first medal for Nigeria, Enekwechi grab gold in Shot Put, Udo-Gabriel gets bronze

Team Nigeria got four medals in Day two of the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba.

Nigeria got their first medal of the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships through Tobi Amusan who won gold in the Women’s 100m Hurdles final.

Amusan on her African Senior Athletics Championships debut ran a time of 12.86s to win the final in Asaba.

It all started in the Heats where she lived up to her pre-competition hype to qualify for the final with a time of 13.18s.

Despite the presence of South Africa’s Rikenette Steenkamp who had run the fastest time in the heats in 13.17s, the Nigerian Amusan streaked clear after the third hurdle to finish first.

This is the fourth Gold Medal she will be winning for Nigeria. She won a Gold Medal each at the 2015 African Junior Championships, African Games in Brazzaville and the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Enekwechi gets Gold in Shot Put

 

Nigeria got another Gold Medal this time through Chukwuebuka Enekwechi who won Men’s Shot Put on Day 2.

21.08 was Enekwechi’s best throw which gave him Gold Medal ahead of  Egypt’s Mohamed Khalifa who threw 19.33m and the 19.05m thrown by South African Kyle Blignaut.

Udo-Gabriel wins bronze in Women's 100m

 

National Junior Champion Joy Udo-Gabriel got a Bronze Medal for Team Nigeria in Women’s 100m.

Udo-Gabriel ran a time of 11.58s in the final to finish behind Janet Amponsah of Ghana who finished in 11.54s to win silver and African record holder Marie Jose Ta Lou of Côte d’Ivoire who ran 11.15s to won Gold.

 

Silver for Temilola

In Hammer Throw, Ogunrinde Temilola got Nigeria a Silver Medal with a distance of 67.39 to finish behind Moroccan Zakour Soukaine who threw 68.28 to win Gold.

Congolese Jennifer Batu finished third with a  distance of 66.43.
