Beauty pageants have no shortage of drama. Between the onstage performances and backstage happenings, there is a lot at stake for the contestants.

These women put in years of hard work all for a title, a scholarship, and a year of fame as one of the most beautiful women in their specific countries. But for some women, that doesn't last.

We take a look at Ghanaian beauty queens who were dethroned or resigned.

 

Gifty Ofori - Stripped

 

The Insignia Group, co-organiser of the 2012 Miss Universe Ghana beauty pageant stripped 2012’s winner of her title barely hours to the crowning of a new queen.

Insignia, in a statement, said the decision was necessitated by several interviews that Gifty Ofori granted the media in the wake of allegations that she did not receive her prizes which contravene the pageant’s laws.

 

Nasara Miriam Abdul Rauf - Stripped

 

There was media uproar when Mariam Abdul Rauf also known as Nasara was stripped off her Ghana’s Most Beautiful Crown for allegedly stealing a mobile phone in the UK. The crown was supposedly handed over to the runner-up Lamisi Sam, who took over the reign as queen.

 

Giuseppina Nana Akua Baafi - Stripped

 

Miss Ghana event relieved the reigning queen, Miss Giuseppina Nana Akua Baafi, of her role as Miss Ghana 2013 Ambassador. The Miss Ghana organisers said the reigning queen did not behave consistently with her commitment to the value of the brand, in the process it into disrepute and public ridicule.

 

Crystal Selorm Amudzi - Resigned

 

Six weeks after crowning Miss Baafi in July 2013, the second runner up - Crystal Selorm Amudzi hinted that her application to defer her academic year was unsuccessful and would like to return to school. She therefore resign so as to go back to school. Sources have it that she resigned as a result of the exploitative nature of the event organisers.

 

Margaret Kuma-Mintah - Resigned

 

Margaret Kuma-Mintah, 2013 Miss Ghana first runner-up resigned from her post just 2 weeks after winning the enviable position.

According to Ghanacelebrities, Margaret Kuma-Mintah, realised the true exploitative nature of Miss Ghana.

Margaret mentioned that she was turned into a perpetual beggar together with the other girls whose sole jobs as winners of Miss Ghana was to move from one office to another, soliciting for funds.

 

Margaret Dery - Resigned

 

She is the newest pageantry queen to resign after a whole lot of controversies. She revealed that she was no longer interested in holding the title as Ghana’s beauty queen.

Although, her reason for handing back the crown is unclear, she took to Twitter calling the Miss Ghana pageant fake.

“Being a Miss Ghana queen has honestly been one of the [sic] worse experiences of my life. Yeah, I know it looks good on the outside, but it’s just one big sham on the inside. All that glitters is not gold. Ladies, you don’t need a crown on your head to succeed.”

Organisers of the event have also faulted Margaret for being unprofessional.

“We wish Margaret Dery well in her next career and we do pray that she will uphold the ethics of professionalism, respect for contracts as well as show the necessary respect to the new authority she finds herself under.”
