Cat sworn in as mayor of local assembly after election victory

The cat, named Sweet Tart emerged the winner in the election in which other animal candidates including 13 dogs, a peacock, a goat, a chicken and another cat also participated.

A 9-year-old cat has been sworn in as new mayor of Michigan village of Omena after beating 17 other candidates in a local election.

The cat, named Sweet Tart emerged the winner in the election in which other animal candidates including 13 dogs, a peacock, a goat, a chicken and another cat also participated.

Sweet Tart happens to be Omena’s fourth mayor to occupy the village’s paw-ffice, and it is expected to be the mayor who will run the affairs of the village until the next elections in 2021.

Prior to its election, the cat told the electorate in its campaign message that: "While I'm home schooled, I graduated first in my class!" which probably made them vote massively for it.

At the end of voting, a total of 7,000 votes were said to have been cast.

Keith Disselkoe, an official who manned the electoral process is quoted as having told media men that “this is by far our largest total."

He added that: "We suspect that there were many votes coming from outside of the immediate area because of our internet reach and because of our publicity and because of the ability to receive votes from PayPal. It's really expanded the number of people that have participated."

Though the other candidates lost in the elections, they do not become totally useless as it is the case in Ghana’s elections. They are all going to hold various positions in the local council, according to ifficials.
