He was among the line-up of artists who featured at the One Africa Music Fest in New York at the weekend, and in an interview with Old Man Ebro on Monday night, August 13, Wande Coal explained how he came about the hit single, 'So Mi So' as well as his musical influences, and upcoming projects.

On how he began his musical journey

''I first started recording music in 2003, I used to be a dancer, I used to dance in different halls and hostels at schools, I grew up listening to Usher, Boyz II Men, songs like 'You Remind Me', Jamaican music from Beenie Man and Sean Paul.

I started at church, then I got to college, I just saw 2face doing his thing and I felt I could do this.

I started learning from Boyz II Men, R Kelly, and Michael Jackson, who were my major role models. I call them 'The Guys', I fused all of them together and became me.''

He speaks on meeting D'banj and his debut album

Wande Coal released his debut studio album, Mushin 2 Mohits in 2009 under the Mo Hits imprint and the project is still mentioned as one of the most defining of the pop era and he recounts joining the Mo Hits crew.

''I met Dbanj and Don Jazzy, they came to my college, I freestyled for them and Jazzy was like, do you have another song, so I started beat-boxing and we did some songs together, then Jazzy got my number.

2007, I got signed, had to leave school, I was in my final year, then I went for my first trip to America, did a show, came back.

I dropped an album, which they say is the best album, M2M. Mushin 2 Mo Hits.

On his song, 'So Mi So', Wande explains the concept behind it

''I just shortened it, it was supposed to be 'So Ro Mi So', which means ''Say my story''.

I am talking about a girl I have been with, who is giving me two sides of the coin, so I am just asking, are you the one for me or am I the one for you, tell me your story.'' he says.

For Iskaba, he explains how it came together, ''Tunez is a friend and family, even before he became a deejay... We were in Brooklyn, under the basement and he came and we did our thing. Iskaba is just good energy.''

He lists 'Superwoman' and 'Baby Hello' as his biggest songs off his last album Wanted, while he recollects a dream his father had for him growing up.

''My Dad used to tell me, you gon end up like 2face.'', he says. The singer who has a good relationship with Wizkid also took time to remind the audience that Wizkid has been in the game for a long time.

''I came out in 2010, Wiz came out in 2011 and already had an album, called, 'Superstar', he has been here before Ojuelegba.'' he stated.

Wande Coal concluded by stating that he has two EPs in the works before the end of the year as well as headlining his own show at the O2 London Arena in November.

''It [The concert] is going to be a fusion of all the people that I have worked with and then I am going to put up like a different new set of people.''

I am dropping two EPs, one for a project I am working on, the first one has seven and the other which is mine has 10.''
