Serena Williams: Tennis superstar suffers heaviest defeat of her career

Since her return in 1995, Serena Williams has never suffered a defeat like this.

Serena Williams suffered the heaviest defeat of her career to Johanna Konta in the Silicon Valley Classic.

Serena who is a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion lost 6-1 6-0 to Konta in San Jose.

The Tennis superstar has never lost a tennis game against any opponent by not winning a least two games but was only able to pick up one point against Konta.

The 36-year-old made a total of 25 unforced errors in the encounter against the British number one.

Speaking after the game Konta acknowledged that Serena was not at the top of her game.

She said, "I tried to put aside the incredible champion she is and just play the player of the day.

"She obviously wasn't playing at her best level, nowhere near it, and I really just tried to play the match on my terms.

"I felt I did better than her on the day but it's still a humbling experience to be out here with her."

Williams, on the other hand, seemed not to be overall bothered by the result of the encounter.

She said, "I think she played well in the second set and I think I wasn't sharp at all in the first set and she got confident and she clearly ran away with it."

American teenager Sofia Kenin awaits Konta in the next round, while the Wimbledon runner-up Serena Williams will continue preparations for the hard court season.
