Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, disclosed that a total of 11,000 pupils sat for the remedial exams organised last year.

Interest in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) resit has shot up following the introduction of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

This is according to the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who expressed his delight with the increasing turnout.

Speaking at an education dialogue forum, he disclosed that a total of 11,000 pupils sat for the remedial exams organised last year.

This is a massive improvement on the previous years, with only 1000 pupils sitting for the BECE resit in 2016.

The Deputy Minister acknowledged that interest was low because there were no spaces in senior high schools for those who pass the resit.

According to him, government’s decision to absorb BECE registration fees is another factor that has accounted for the increased number of students taking the exams.

Dr. Adutwum further stated that the dropout rate in junior high schools had been high because some parents struggled to pay BECE registration for their wards.
