A fire incident occurred at the Ecobank Nigeria headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos on Tuesday, July 31, 2018.
The Public Relations Unit of Ecobank said that the fire started when a “diesel tanker exploded near their generator.”
In a tweet which was retweeted by the bank's official handle, Channels Television business reporter, Boason Omofaye said, “Ecobank Nigeria PR Unit says Tuesday fire at Lagos HQ caused by diesel delivery truck, impacting truck and generator only.”
The bank said the situation was under control.
Incorporated in Lomé, Togo in 1988, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (Ecobank Plc), is the parent company of the leading independent pan-African banking group.
It currently has a presence in 36 African countries, including Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya among others.
On Monday, a related incident occurred at an Access Bank branch office in Ondo state, south western Nigeria. The incident was said to have destroyed some offices at the branch and section of the Automated Teller Machines of the bank.
In May 2018, fire also gutted the headquarters of Nigeria's central bank. The inferno only affected the generating plants of the banking regulator in Abuja, the nation's capital.
