KNUST converts all single-sex halls into mixed halls

From the next academic year, which begins this September, all halls in the school will house both male and females.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has officially converted all single-sex halls into mixed ones.

From the next academic year, which begins this September, all halls in the school will house both male and females.

The single-sex halls which have been concerted include Katanga, Unity, Africa, Independence, University, Unity and Queen Elizabeth.

In a statement, authorities of KNUST said the decision is in line with the university’s policy of periodic review of Residential Accommodation for students.”

Management noted that the conversion tallies with “the University’s policy of expanding access to female students remain unchanged.”

“In line with the University’s policy of periodic review of Residential Accommodation for students, it has been decided that effective the 2018/2019 Academic year, all the six (6) Traditional Halls of Residence namely, Independence Hall, University Hall, Africa Hall, Republic Hall, Unity Hall and Queen Elizabeth II Hall would be designated as mixed Halls,” the statement added.

The decision to convert the aforementioned halls comes despite strong opposition from some students.

Earlier this month, alumni and current resident members of the concerted halls staged a demonstration against the decision, whiles petitioning the Council of State, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry in charge of Tertiary institution.

 

The demonstrators had placards with inscriptions: “Do not destroy Nkrumah’s legacy”, “The system of intimidation must end”, “Say no to mixed halls”, among others.

However, management of the University have gone ahead to formally convert all single-sex halls into mixed ones.
