Prof Akindele: ICPC probes OAU sex-for-marks lecturer

Sacked OAU lecturer explains why he demanded sex from student

ICPC says dismissing the OAU sex-for-marks lecturer, Prof Richard Akindele isn’t just enough.

The last is yet to be heard of the sex-for-marks scandal against Professor Richard Akindele of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, by a female student, Monica Osagie.

Despite Prof Akindele’s dismissal from the institution by the authorities, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) says it would soon commence an investigation into the matter.

Addressing journalists at a press conference organised by Youth Alive Foundation (YAF), the Commissioner for Education at the ICPC, Mohammed Bade, noted that soliciting sex from students for marks was an act of corruption and lecturers found guilty would be prosecuted.

“We have also discovered a lot of cases that border on moral corruption like sexual harassment in the universities in particular,” he stated.

“We are currently prosecuting those behind it. I am sure you are aware of Prof. Akindele’s case in OAU, we are prosecuting the case right now.

“Even though, the university said they have dismissed the professor, we said that is not enough, we will want to prosecute him.

“We are prosecuting a lot of such many cases in the universities across the country,” he added.

Speaking on the activities of the ICPC, he noted that the Commission had investigated and closed down fake NYSC camps across the country.

Earlier, the YAF Executive Director, Uduak Okon, said the youth-based foundation focused on educating young Nigerians on the evils of corruption and the need for them to avoid corrupt practices.

“Youth are in large demography, youth have less interest in maintaining the status quo, so we have a pandemic of corruption in Nigeria, if we don’t arrest it, our future is bleak,” she said.

Okon maintained that there was need on the part of the youth to end corruption and make a positive change in Nigeria.

Coordinator of Youth Anti-Corruption Network, Ovo Otarigho, called for the proper investigation into the death of the corps member, Linda Igwetu, who was allegedly killed by a policeman in Abuja.

The conference on anti-corruption scheduled for Tuesday, July 24, 2018, would feature the release of recent evidence of corruption in Nigeria and its implication on our national life.
