Nigeria's former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar has described the sieges on the residences of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu as troubling and unsettling in a democratic nation.
Operatives of the Nigerian Police had laid siege to the Abuja homes of President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu over alleged plans to remove the the two leaders during sitting at the National Assembly by lawmakers loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Atiku, in a statement issued on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, said no democratic nation ought to treat the leadership of its Parliament like common criminals in the course of a political disagreement.
“The news of the sieges on the residences of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, is both troubling and unsettling.
“No democratic nation ought to treat the leadership of its Parliament like common criminals in the course of a political disagreement.”
The former vice president urged President Muhammadu Buhari to uphold the tenet of democracy and condone the action of the security forces.
