The pan Urhobo apex socio-cultural body, Urhobo Progress Union, has called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate last week’s invasion of the Senate by suspected thugs who stole the mace.
Though the police have recovered the mace, UPU said if the incident was swept under the carpet, there could be a recurrence.
Speaking with NewsSplashy on Saturday, the union’s Director of Publicity, Mr. Abel Oshevire, noted that the Urhobos were aware of the allegation against one of its sons and a member representing Delta Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, of masterminding the invasion.
He stated that only thorough and unbiased investigation would reveal the true culprits.
He added that Urhobo, like every other tribe in the country, condemned the incident which had ridiculed the country.
The UPU secretary said, “The UPU, without a doubt, accepts Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as its senator. The UPU is proud of Urhobos who have distinguished themselves in various vocations and callings.’’
The union urged the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari not to allow the perpetrators of the act to go unpunished.
It said, “Every Urhobo person is an honourable person. Urhobos are honourable people and we will never allow anyone to smear our reputation. Therefore, whoever that is behind the invasion, we want the law to take its due course.
“We prayed that our son (Senator Ovie Omo-Agege) is not involved in such a despicable act. If he is involved, we say it’s unfortunate.’’
It added that any attempt to cover-up the incident would be seen as a conspiracy between the Federal Government and the perpetrators of the act.
