Drunk driver crushes 18-year-old girl in Rivers

A drunk driver on Sunday crushed an 18-year-old girl to death on Ikwerre Road, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
It was gathered that the teenager was receiving a phone call, unaware of the oncoming vehicle, which hit and killed her on the spot while she was about crossing the road.
An eyewitness, who only identified himself as Emeka, said that the driver of the car (Mercedes Benz 190) and one passenger were drunk as the passenger was seen carrying a bottle of beer and the car was also filled with alcoholic drinks.
Emeka said, “They were two inside the vehicle and one of them was still holding his bottle of beer when it happened. The boot of the car and the back sit were also filled with alcoholic drinks.
“Actually, the fault was from the girl, because she was making a phone call and did not look before crossing when the car lost control and hit her.”
Emeka explained further that the driver stopped and did not try to escape from the scene before the police arrived on the scene, carried the corpse away and arrested the driver.
The vehicle involved in the accident was also impounded by the policemen.
“The driver of the vehicle stopped on his own, trying to get help and within a few minutes, the police came and arrested the man and carried the dead body away.
“As the girl’s phone fell in the process, some touts tried to steal the phone, but I saw it and immediately grabbed him, took the girl’s phone from the boy and handed it over to the police. The police used the phone in contacting the girl’s relatives,” Emeka said.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, adding that the corpse of the victim had been deposited in the mortuary pending the end of investigation.
