My friend (Tolani) and I visited Micos chicken and Waffles on a Sunday afternoon and while we enjoyed our meal, the customer service wasn’t great. This was definitely a turn off for us.
Location:
1, Victoria Arobieke street by Admirality Way, Lekki Phase 1, a walking distance from Prince Ebeano supermarket.
Ambience:
The space is small and seating is set up for a group hang out with tables of three and four. Colourful chairs but there isn’t any fancy décor here (they could put in a bit of an effort). Asides my friend and I, the place was empty but two people came in to get something to go while we were there.
There’s a T. V (to entertain customers I believe) but it seems the staff practically just change the channel when they want regardless of what the customer thinks (let me explain). Big Brother Nigeria was on when we got in and I haven’t really been following the show asides the usual Tobi and CeeC drama that I got a whiff of thanks to Twitter.
Anyway, Tolani took the opportunity to give me a bit of gist on the contestants on the show as we watched it. We were clearly paying some attention to what was showing so I expected the staff to ask if we didn’t mind having the channel changed before they did. Instead, they decided it was okay to change to some channel where a noisy Nollywood movie was showing. (Do you think this was okay and I’m just making a fuss over nothing?)
Taste:
I had the waffle burger and it was really nice. The chicken was properly seasoned and had a bit of pepper (they have a thing for pepper here, would explain this shortly). The downside to the meal though was that the waffle was quite soft so with the first bite, it started to fall apart and my hands got messed up with mayo.
I eventually had to request for cutlery to be able to complete the meal. (Imagine if I was on a casual date, I would have felt embarrassed! So, learn from my experience guys, if you must have this on a date, get cutlery from the start, don’t attempt to form James bond!). Perhaps Micos could also help us by looking into making the waffle with a different texture so it doesn’t break so easily.
I got fries as a side and it came with pepper! As in, it seemed like they had sprinkled some pepper a.k.a “ata gungun” (Yoruba style) on it before frying it. I was really confused by this, I mean, the pepper did give it a nice kick and it tasted okay but why wasn’t I pre-informed? What if I wasn’t a fan of pepper? It would have made a whole lot of difference if I was informed at the point of placing the order so I actually decide if I want the pepper or not. (Or am I just over-reacting? Do tell!)
Tolani had the chocolate Belgian waffle with a sausage on the side. As soon as I sighted it, I knew I wasn’t a fan as it looked light brown and didn’t have the dark brown effect chocolatey look i usually prefer. I decided to have a taste of the waffle as I didn’t want to be presumptuous. It wasn’t really chocolatey, felt more like they added a little cocoa powder to the waffle mixture and not proper chocolate.
Truth is the waffle tasted okay, but for someone who likes sweet things, I was quite disappointed that it wasn’t as chocolatey as I would have preferred although it wasn’t even my order. Lol!
Price:
- The waffle burger: N1,700
- Fries: N800
- Chocolate Belgian waffle: N1,500
- Sausage: N400.
Customer service:
The customer service wasn't great, the staff had this “I don’t want to be here” look and it felt like I was being a bother each time I asked for something. Also, the smoke from the kitchen (probably cos of the pepper) was getting into the seating area as the door that separates both areas wasn’t shut. This got Tolani coughing a lot but the staff just ignored and she had to stand up to go close it herself. (Not cool!)
Parking:
Small, probably just 3 to 4 cars can fit in the space in front of the store.
Overall, the food at Micos is nice, although I think it could be better really as it’s supposed to be a WAFFLEHOUSE. I would visit Mico’s again but I would most likely get a take-away as the dining experience wasn’t great.
