Premier League: Chelsea find replacement for Emenalo

Michael Emenalo

Michael Emenalo left his role as Sporting Director of Chelsea in November 2017 and joined AS Monaco three weeks later.

English Premier League Outfit Chelsea, are set to name a replacement for Michael Emenalo who resigned from his role as Sporting Director.

The reigning Premier League Champions are set to appoint Luis Campos to succeed the departed Nigerian.

According to the Independent, Chelsea are currently negotiating with the representatives of the 53-year-old.

The Ex-Nigerian international left his role as Sporting Director of Chelsea in November 2017 and joined AS Monaco three weeks later, a decision that is still surprising to some Chelsea supporters.

Campos worked with his compatriot Jose Mourinho as part of the scouting team, while he was at Real Madrid.

In an interview with Yahoo, Campos suggested that English clubs do not recruit properly in defensive areas.

He said, “I think most English clubs do not know how to recruit for an issue that I almost think is cultural as almost everyone makes the same mistake.

“English clubs really, really like top attacking players, yet to a large extent make them play alongside medium-quality defences.”

The Portuguese also illustrated that the recruitment policy in England is what has made the league underachieve in Europe.

“And that, in my opinion, explains their relative lack of success in European competitions despite them spending exorbitant sums in recent years.

“Successfully building a good team project always involves the ability of players to relate and ‘match’ to each other." Campos said

He also distinguished between great talents and medium quality support for team structure.

“In the Premier League there is a big difference between great talents, and the medium quality of support for the same offensive talent. Most teams lack great defenders, and defensive midfielders.” Campos concluded.

Campos is credited with the acquisitions of Bernardo Silva, Thomas Lemar, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Fabinho and Kylian Mbappe

Chelsea are yet to release an official statement about the possible arrival of Campos.

Pulse Sports will continue to bring updates as Chelsea aim to replace the departed Emenalo.
