
Rivers Angels emerged champions of the NWFL Champions Shield on Penalties
The inaugural edition of the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) Champions Shield was won by Aiteo Cup winners Rivers Angels, who beat League winners Nasarawa Amazons to the season opening trophy.
Rivers United were victorious on penalties, after the match ended 1 – 1 after 90 minutes.
The match was played at the Agege Soccer Temple on Sunday, March 4.
Just back from the WAFU Women's Cup Alice Ogebe scored in the 42nd minute to give her side a half time lead, Nasarawa Amazons equalized in the second half through Ejalonibu Adejoke in the 58th minute, which turned out to be the last goal of the game and both sides went straight to penalties.
Rivers Angels emerged winners of the shoot out when Dooshema Tarnum failed to convert for the Amazons, and Uju Joseph scored to seal the win.
The NWFL Champions Shield is the curtain raiser for the new season between the league and cup winners.
The league is scheduled to start on the 7th of April when defending champions Nasarawa Amazons host FC Robo of Lagos in Lafia.
