Indian Wells: Potro beats Federer to win men's title,Osaka wins women's title

Juan Martin Del Potro hands Roger Federer his first defeat of 2018.

Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Roger Federer to win the Indian Wells title, while unseeded Naomi Osaka defeated Daria Kastkina to emerge winner in the women’s category.

World number one Roger Federer was inflicted with his first defeat of 2018 by Juan Martin Del Potro in the final of the Indian Wells masters.

The Argentine defeated Federer in three sets ( 6-4 6-7 (8/10), 7-6 (7/2) to emerge champion.

After Del Potro took the first set, Federer recovered to win the second set, while Del Potro narrowly edged the final set after wasting two a match point.

The Argentine had repeated wrist surgeries which nearly made him quit tennis, his win makes him the first Argentine to win in Indian wells.

Naomi Osaka vs Daria Kasatkina

Naomi Osaka who was unseeded for the Indian wells emerged champion after she defeated Daria Kasatkina in the final.

 

Osaka defeated Kasatkina in straight sets (6-3, 6-2), on Sunday, March 18.

Both players are 20-years-old but Osaka who is from Japan came into the tournament as an unseeded player, while Russian Kasatkina is ranked world number 19.

 

Osaka had earlier defeated some heavyweights such as Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanaska and Simona Halep on her route to the final.

She became the second unseeded player to win at the Indian wells since Kim Clijsters in 2005.
