These are five things we learnt from Tuesday's Champions League fixtures.
The Champions League second leg round of 16 fixtures continued with a very surprising result on Tuesday, March 13 as Manchester United were knocked out after losing 2-1 at home to Seville.
Roma’s away goal in the first leg tie against Shakhtar Donetsk counted for them as they progressed with a 1-0 win at home.
These are five things we learnt from these fixtures
1. Sanchez is a Manchester United flop
When Manchester United overtook Manchester City to sign Alexis Sanchez, it was to cut the gap of quality between two sides.
Sanchez who had been frustrated with the mediocrity at Arsenal wanted a new challenge and Manchester United presented a fresh and better one.
But just three months into his Manchester United career, he should be considered a flop.
Against Sevilla, Sanchez was lost again, losing the ball as usual and failed to influence the game. On Tuesday night, he lost the ball 42 times which is the most for any individual in the Champions League so far this season.
Jose Mourinho believes Sanchez will be more influential next season, maybe, maybe not but for now, he should be considered a flop.
2. Mourinho mistakes cost Manchester United
Much has been said about Jose Mourinho’s approach to the game and although he has won titles with his conservative tactics, it is beginning to cost Manchester United. With no lead from the first leg, Mourinho was still very cautious in his approach, setting a rigid midfield-two of Marouane Fellaini and Nemanja Matic which was overrun by Sevilla.
United in recent weeks have had to rely on the heroics of David de Gea or individuals in defence which was going to end in disaster.
Against Sevilla, Manchester United were also formless in attack, a result of an uninspiring manager who only hopes to out-defend his oppositions. Mourinho made mistakes on Tuesday night and it ended up being very costly.
3. Yedder proves his worth
Wissam Ben Yedder did not start in both legs of the round of 16 ties against Manchester United but at Old Trafford, on Tuesday he proved his worth.
He came in the 71st minute and netted two goals before the 78th minute to secure the win.
His first goal was a good one, holding the ball in front of Eric Bailly before smashing the ball past De Gea.
He now has eight goals in the Champions League this season, the second highest top scorer in the competition this season. Put some respck on his name.
4. Manchester United attack need changes
After a dismal performance against Sevilla, Manchester United’s attack needs some changes. Marcus Rashford destroyed Liverpool just three days ago from the left but from the right against Sevilla, he was lost, unable to control the ball with his weaker foot thereby making it difficult to be effective when marked from the right.
He looked more dangerous from the left and that should also be one of Mourinho’s mistakes on Tuesday.
While Romelu Lukaku was impressive again despite Manchester United’s loss, he oftentimes looked isolated on Tuesday night.
5. Dzeko again for Roma
Down 2-1 from the first leg away from home, Roma needed just one goal to progress and they got through their main man Edin Dzeko.
His goal was a fine finish, taking a fantastic pass from Kevin Strootman, beating the offside trap to finish clinically past Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper.
That was his fourth goal for Roma in the Champions League this season and it was enough to send them to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2008.
