Ever wondered what a Muslim American family really looks like?

“Unfair & Ugly”, a new TV show, offers a representation of what being a Muslim family in America is all about.
This is being brought to life by Yumna Khan and Nida Chowdhry, first-generation Indian and Pakistani-Americans.

What is “Unfair & Ugly”?

The original dramedy series shows a South Asian Muslim family “trying to keep it together”.
This family is situated in  Orange County, California, where viewers get to see Sana and her brother, Haaris, deal with their immigrant parents’ expectations and being millennial Muslims.
According to Khan, the title Unfair & Ugly is a play on the skin whitening cream 'Fair & Lovely.'
She explains: “We wanted to create a show that feels real to us, one that we can relate to when it comes to love, careers, and generation gaps and we want to layer it up with topics that are a little taboo in our community.”

Why this show is so important to the religious landscape in America and the world

These two creators hope to use the sitcom to change how people see Muslims, as the representation of Muslims in post 9/11 film has really been terrible.
Chowdhry, a UC Irvine film studies graduate, and independent producer, says, “I’m so deeply intrigued, fascinated, and obsessed with media representation, and how much moving images impact people, their psychology, and how it influences politics and society.”

Khan, a graduate from University of California San Diego with a degree in communication studies, adds, “We wanted to create a show that feels real to us, one that we can relate to when it comes to love, careers, and generation gaps and we want to layer it up with topics that are a little taboo in our community.”
The duo hope to bring ‘Unfair & Ugly’ to life in 2018.
