The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has called on state commissioners of police to beef up security ahead of the 2019 elections.
According to AIT, the IGP said this in a meeting with commissioners of police and senior officers at the force headquarters in Abuja.
Idris also told the officers that the police is committed to fighting crime and protecting lives and property.
Speaking on the Fulani herdsmen issue, the IGP asked residents in the affected areas to work with security agencies.
He also called on Nigerians to be security conscious and provide the police with useful information.
Security has collapsed in Nigeria
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has said that the killings by the herdsmen is a sign that the security architecture of Nigeria has broken down.
Dogara also said that it is the constitutional role of the police to protect lives and property.
The Speaker also urged the Nigerian Police to curb the Fulani herdsmen killings.
