These are five things you should know about new Super Falcons coach.
The Super Falcons have a new coach following the announcement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that they have agreed on a two-year contract with Swede Thomas Dennerby.
The NFF announced that contract which is until the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo is subject to renewal if the meeting performance milestones agreed are met.
But who is the new Super Falcons boss?
These are five things you should know about him.
1. A former footballer himself
Dennerby played football and spent most of his playing career at Hammarby IF and Sparvägens IF. He never got to play for the Swedish senior team but he represented the national U-21 team.
He played for Hammarby IF between 1977–1985 and for Spårvägens IF between 1985–1987.
2. Former police officer
Dennerby made it big with football with a very modest career. To make ends meet, he joined the police force as a part-time job. He was a police officer before he became a coach.
3. He won Swedish manager of the year
Dennerby was named Swedish manager of the year in women’s football in 2014. He won the Swedish league title with Hammarby IF in 2001, and the Swedish women’s title (Damallsvenskan) with Djurgården.
He also led Sweden to a third-place finish at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
4. Acting career
Dennerby has a little acting career in his résumé. He starred in a popular television series titled the “The other sport’ a documentary which debuted in 2013 and x-rayed the conditions of women’s football in Sweden from the mid-1960s till date.
5. Never worked outside of Sweden
The Super Falcons job will be Dennerby’s first in his playing and coaching career.
But as a player and a coach, he has never had a job outside of his home country Sweden.
