THERESA MAY today refused to say she believed her own Defence Secretary over the affair that threatens his political future.
Asked twice whether she was confident Gavin Williamson had “told the truth” about his fireplace fling, the PM would only say it happened before he became an MP more than a decade ago.
Theresa May refused to discuss Gavin Williamson’s flingReutersThe refusal threatens to pile more pressure on the 41 year-old Tory rising star who stunned Westminster by revealing a brief romance with a married former colleague in 2004 that almost cost him his marriage.
Mr Williamson said he almost threw away his family after a “flirtatious” relationship – but denied suggestions of harassment.
Challenged yesterday if she was confident she knew all the facts given she sacked Deputy PM Damian Green for lying, Mrs May said: “What has come out is something that happened even before Gavin was a member of Parliament, let alone a Minister.
“In relation to Damian Green, the report showed the ministerial code had been broken, it was on that basis that I took the decision.”

He has repeatedly refused to say whether he was sacked from the fireplace firm 14 years ago despite former colleagues suggesting the woman involved complained of his conduct.
