My diet after eating mad for the holidays should have started since the 4of January but every day I wake up, I push it to the next day...
Enough is Enough! We have to start preparing for summer body early so time to cleanse our bodies….
Green smoothies for 7 days or 5 days depending on how willing the body is.
The fun part….their names would have a touch of Nigerian languages!
Recipe: Shoko Pineapple smoothie
1 cup pineapple
2 cups of Shoko (spinach in Yoruba)
2 Tablespoons ginger, peeled and chopped
Juice of 1 lemon
Chop up pineapple slices and blend with baby spinach, ginger and lemon juice…..easy right!
Random: So I recently found out that shoko was coined from “shokoyokoto” meaning “get your husband fat”! Now looking at the vegetable with a straight face is a problem.
RECIPE: BANANA STRAWBERRY UGWU SMOOTHIE
I believe this should be tried at about the third day when you are getting tired and you just need something super yummy.
Notice that there’s a break from ginger & lemon which should be key ingredients for detox as they soothe the digestive system.
INGREDIENTS
1 frozen banana
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 Tablespoon peanut butter
2 cups of Ugwu (fluted pumpkin leaves in Igbo)
1 cup almond milk
DIRECTIONS
Place all ingredients in blender and blend till smooth. Consistency should be creamy.
RECIPE: AVOCADO ALLAYAHU SMOOTHiE
Avocados are actually known to enhance weight-loss so this is a key recipe. For those who can’t stand avocado, carrot is a good substitute.
INGREDIENTS
1 avocado
1 apple
2 cups Allayahu (Green/ African spinach in Hausa)
½ ginger
Juice of ½ lemon
1 cup of water
DIRECTIONS
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
Note: At first, green smoothies sound terrible but we all get used to them by the second/third day. And it is important to experiment with different fruits till you find what you like.
I am only sharing these particular three because I have tried them and the results were good to my taste buds.. Other fruits and vegetables like carrots, kale, broccoli, watermelon, celery can be used, even herbs like mint can be incorporated. The whole point of it is to cleanse your body, free your bowels and stay hydrated!
