European Champions decine? Real Madrid decline due to transfer activity?

Is Real Madrid's inconsistency this season down to their activity in the summer transfer market?

Spanish champions Real Madrid suffered another set back in their quest to retain their La Liga title after being held to a 2 - 2 draw away at Celta Vigo.

Hence the question, can Madrid's woes this season be traced back to their activity in the summer transfer window?

Last season Madrid won the league as well as the Champions League, but the key to that triumph was the depth in their squad hence proper rotation resting players for key fixtures in Europe.

Departures

There wasn't much to add to the team, but the departures of James Rodriguez to German champions Bayern Munich and Alvaro Morata to English champions Chelsea are baffling decisions especially when both players were integral parts of Madrid's triumph, both contributing a total of 31 goals last season.

Hence the decision by Florentino Perez not to make a 'galactico' signing can be understood but their departures made the team weaker, the arrivals of Marcos Llorente, Jesus Vallejo, Theo Hernandez and Dani Ceballos are commendable but future prospects.

This weekend's draw puts Real Madrid 16 points behind league leaders Barcelona albeit with a game in hand.

It is safe to say the league is out of their hands, a runners-up finish to Tottenham in the group stage of the Champions League is not good enough for a club like Madrid, but with the winter transfer window now open, Real Madrid can rectify their summer transfer activities.
