Nigerian-born Arsenal player Chuba Akpom has been banned from driving after he crashed his N29m (£60,000) Range Rover in a drunk-driving accident.

Akpom who is a close friend of Alex Iwobi is of Nigerian descent and has been at Arsenal since he was six.

Drink-driving

On Sunday, December 17, the 22-year-old was returning from a birthday party when he crashed his Range Rover at around 4:50 am.

Akpom smashed into a fence and furniture after he lost control of the car near his home in Barnet, North London.

Police at the scene subjected the Arsenal player to a breath test which he failed. He was thereafter taken to the police station and charged with drink-driving.

Akpom banned

The Willesden Magistrates Court on Monday, January 1 handed him a driving ban of 17 months and fined him.

The court also learnt that his dad who was initially unaware of the accident feared that he had been kidnapped when he discovered the wreckage the following morning.

According to Akpom’s lawyer Aki Achillea, his dad was about the call the police before the player arrived home with a taxi.

Akpom claimed to have 'stupidly agreed' to put vodka in two glasses of cranberry juice at the party which got him drunk.

His driving was erratic and he was observed by an off-duty police officer. He was parallel to a Shell petrol station and lost control, mounting the grass verge," prosecutor Zahid Hussain told the court.

He crashed into roadside furniture then drove back towards the road and into a heavy-duty fencing, knocking it down and out of the ground.

“He caused extensive damage to his Range Rover and left considerable debris strewn around the road.”

Arsenal are yet to make any comment about the accident.
