Too many cases of the way our police units operate with reckless abandon and outright disregard for basic right, lack of empathy and dignity for human life.
In this digital age, the use of social media has proven to be an effective tool to draw attention to some ignored societal ills that plague the everyday life of a Nigerian youth. One too many cases is that of the way our police units operate with reckless abandon and outright disregard for basic right, lack of empathy and dignity for human life.
Lately, there has been a collective public outcry which was instigated on Twitter against the Special Anti Robbery Squad -a division within the Nigerian Police Force; with the hashtag #ENDSARS to raise awareness about their condemnable acts such as public harassment, alleged extra judicial killings, wanton extortion which have been normalized as part of their mode of operation and find lasting solution to this menace.
To say that the Special Anti Robbery squads established to help reduce crimes have inadvertently turned themselves into criminals is not an overstatement.
However, the good officers among them should not be ignored but given due commendation for discharging their duties as expected of them.
This campaign created out of the hashtag #ENDSARS has led to many to join the bandwagon lending voices of support to promote the scrapping of this police unit.
There have been certain clamors from notable celebrities in the music industry who, having had different encounters with the uniformed men, expressed concerns over this matter.
Even our Politicians don’t want to be left out of the buzz, so different perspectives on this subject matter were expressed over the possible reform of the police unit for better delivery of service to the citizens.
Lastly, living in a society that provides a sense of belonging and security is what the Government should work at by addressing security concerns of the populace as opposed living in constant fear and in state of helplessness.
