1. Neymar: £198m (Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain)
Bankrolled by the mega-rich Qatar Sports Investments, Paris Saint Germain pulled up the transfer of the year.
It was the transfer that dominated headlines all summer and after weeks of intense speculations, Paris Saint-Germain smashed the transfer record by splashing a whopping £198m on Neymar from Barcelona.
It was a signing that shocked the whole of the football world and which reinforced Paris Saint-Germain’s ambition to become one of the top clubs in world football.
2. Ousmane Dembele: £96.8m (Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona)
Jolted by the loss of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona were frantically looking for the Brazilian’s replacement.
After a series of unsuccessful pursuits of Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, Barcelona turned to Borussia Dortmund sensation Ousmane Dembele who had impressed in just his debut season in Germany where he was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season and awarded the league’s Rookie of the Season award.
Dortmund were not ready to let go of their star easily and with the knowledge of the money Barcelona got for Neymar, placed a huge price tag on the player.
At the end, Barcelona got the France international for £96.8m.
3. Romelu Lukaku: £75m (Everton to Manchester United)
Manchester United were in dire need of a proven goalscorer ahead of the 2017/2018 season and were linked with a host of names.
With Real Madrid playing hardball with Alvaro Morata, Jose Mourinho turned to his former prodigy Romelu Lukaku who was on the verge of re-joining Chelsea where they worked together.
Mourinho however quickly snagged Lukaku under the nose of Chelsea with £75m paid to Everton.
4. Alvaro Morata: £70.6m (Real Madrid to Chelsea)
After losing their target to Manchester United, Chelsea looked to Alvaro Morata whom Antonio Conte had signed at Juventus but could not work with him following his resignation immediately to take up the position as coach of the Italian national team in 2014.
Conte, a huge admirer of Morata splashed £70.6m on the striker from Real Madrid.
5. Oscar £60m (Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG)
In a bid to gain global recognition, Chinese clubs splashed €396m on some popular players who they made some of the world’s best-paid stars.
