Police have responded to a possible pipe bomb explosion at Port Authority Bus Terminal, and reportedly have a suspect in custody.

  • Police say they have one person in custody after an explosion took place in Port Authority, Midtown Manhattan's massive transit hub.
  • Reports indicate a man who may have had a second explosive device has been detained.
  • Transit is backed up across the city as a result.

The NYPD has responded to a pipe bombing at Port Authority Bus Terminal and detained a suspect, a police spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider.

New York City's official emergency notification channel reported police activity at Port Authority, a massive transit hub in Midtown Manhattan, on Monday morning. ABC reports the explosion happened between 42nd street and 8th avenue causing some injuries.

Freelance Journalist Angelica Spanos tweeted that the suspect "possibly has wires on him," indicating a possible second explosive device. Pipe bombs are a rudimentary bomb that spreads shrapnel to injure or kill people.

Immediately after reports of an explosion surfaced, pictures of a police bomb-squad truck that reportedly arrived at the scene popped up on social media. Videos from the area shows dozens of armed police and several ambulances rushing to the scene.

Police say the building was being evacuated, and that the blast took place around 7:25 a.m. ET.

The streets around the terminal have been closed and the A, C, and E subway lines at the terminal have been evacuated, according to the NYPD. Port Authority is a critical transit hub for commuters entering New York City.

In 2016, the terminal saw a more than quarter of a million daily trips at the terminal.
